Egress Windows – Three Major Types To Choose From Somerset County, NJ
Egress windows are an essential part of your home’s basement. They provide another point of entry and exit that can be used in an emergency. Fire and police personnel can enter your home through the egress windows if necessary, and you can use them to escape from a fire. Egress windows also provide other major benefits. For example, they provide a source of natural light to the dark basement. They provide ventilation that can improve the air quality of your home.
There are different types of egress windows that are suitable for your home. All need to meet the egress window requirements of a height of at least 24 inches, width of at least 20 inches, and clearance area of at least 5.7 square feet. Here are three main types:
1. Casement Windows
A casement window will open in and out, much in the way that a door on a hinge will open. This can be controlled in two ways: either a handle is used to open the window or a rotating lever. Casement windows are often the best choice for a basement because they open out.
These are the smallest type of egress windows. They can be either 41 inches high by 20 inches wide, or 24 inches high by 34.2 inches wide. Both sizes will meet the egress window requirement.
2. Double Hung Windows
A very common style that is used on both old and new homes is the double-hung window. This window consists of two sashes that overlap horizontally in the middle. The bottom half will open upward. In some cases, the double-hung window will open from top to bottom.
To ensure that the double-hung window meets all requirements, the opening pane must be at least 34 inches wide and clear at least 24 inches from top to bottom. As a result, the entire double-hung window will need to be more than 48 inches high to meet the requirements.
The sliding window is made of two different sections. These sections open from side to side along a track. To meet the typical width requirement of 20 inches, sliding windows will need to be at least 41 inches high. When you include both sections, the minimum width of your sliding window should be 40 inches.
No matter what style you choose, egress windows are important fixtures in your home and provide many benefits to you and your family.
