Verona Township is located in Essex County, N.J. Verona is home to over 13,300 residents and covers 2.7 square miles (U.S. Census 2010).

Verona was part of the Horseneck Tract purchase from the Lenape Indians in 1701. The land purchased resembled the shape of a Horse’s neck and head.

The area was known as Vernon Valley in the 1800’s. Verona is a derivative of this valley name.

In 1892, Verona left Caldwell Township to become Verona Township by an Act of the N.J. State Legislature. In 1902, Verona Township split between Verona Township (later Cedar Grove) and Verona Borough. In 1982, Verona Borough was reincorporated by the N.J. State Legislature to be a Township.

The nation’s oldest flagmaker, Annin & Co., had its manufacturing plant in Verona.
